Trump and Trump Jr.: ‘The media is trying to get the story wrong’
President Donald Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner have been in the news this week for the alleged improper contact between Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign.
Here’s what you need to know about the latest allegations.
The Russian lawyer was an agent of a foreign power.
The Washington Post published a report last week that says that a Russian spy working with the Russian government sought the help of Trump Jr., the eldest son of the president, to get damaging information on Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Trump Jr.’s lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, told the Post the information was part of a Russian government effort to support Trump’s presidential campaign.
Trump’s son has denied any wrongdoing, and has denied receiving any information about the meeting.
Trump has said he was not aware of any campaign opposition research.
But in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, he said he didn’t remember having the meeting with Veselnitskaya and that it occurred at the behest of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
He said he met with the lawyer on behalf of a woman who had promised damaging information about Clinton and on behalf in the hope that it would be useful to her in the campaign.
Veselnitzkaya said she had information that could “help your father elect my opponent in the election.”
In a statement, Veselníitskaya said that she did not receive any such information.
She added that she never offered to provide the information and that her purpose was to obtain dirt on Clinton.
“This is clearly a very big mistake and it will be a huge problem for my family and my country,” she said.
“I would like to ask the US government to pardon me for my actions.”
Veselnaya did not respond to requests for comment.
The Post report was based on emails, which Veselnikovskaya says are authentic.
In a series of messages to an associate, she said that Veselnitchkskaya was “asking to meet with the President to discuss adoption of Russian children by Americans” and that she was also looking to gain damaging information against Clinton.
Veslenikov, who was born in 1956, has denied the charges.
The Kremlin has denied that any information was offered to Trump Jr..
“I don’t know where this information came from,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“If this is true, the United States should immediately release the information to the public.”
Trump Jr said that the meeting was not with Veslnyitskaya.
“No, not at all,” he told Hannity.
“There was no meeting.”
He also told Hannity that the information came directly from the Russian ambassador.
The meeting, according to a White House official, took place in June 2016 at Trump Tower, which is about a mile away from the White House.
Trump also told Fox News he did not remember meeting Veselnitkyskaya.
Vesnika has not commented publicly on the meeting and has not been charged with any crime.
Trump told the AP last week he didn´t know Veselnika and believed her to be an innocent woman.
He also said that his son had told him that Vesli is a Russian “friend.”
